All told, iA Writer for Windows is a purchase of $29 dollars (USD).I know what I’m about to say may seem banal to people who don’t use dark mode. Maybe they should consider moving to Bielefeld. It's a long way from iA Writer to The Archive (or to Zettlr for that matter), and even the popular alternatives such as Absurdian and Waterloggedseq aren't there yet either. What it does do well is open files rapidly, and the split-window preview mode is marginally preferable to the in-place interpretation of Zettlr. But other than what I knew going in, it does highlight certain parts of speech, at least it claims that it does, since switching on the syntax highlighting does nothing on my machine. This is the perfect editor for the Twitter "journalist," since it doesn't encourage citing any sources whatsoever. There is no LaTeX interpretation, Pandoc integration or customizable Pandoc export capability, no support for Pandoc citations, Zotero or bibliographic database integration. Nevertheless, it's not a bad stripped-down distraction-free editor, once you get past the distractions. I purchased iA Writer for Windoze, but I must have had some sort of misunderstanding since the editor doesn't seem to support wikilinks, or at least not the wikilinks that Zettlr supports. I love the feel of The Archive, as well, but the inability to embed inline images and the lack of a mobile app are deal breakers for me. The lack of bracketed wikilinks and backlinks would be a really nice thing to have – and I'm increasingly of the belief that this is the key feature needed for a seamless "second brain" system of notes. On the whole, I generally like iA Writer for the writing experience, and I haven't really found an alternative to it that both meets my criteria for a Zettelkasten app, and feels good to write within. This also isn't a dealbreaker for me, but it interrupts the flow of note taking and has become an annoyance. Often I end up renaming files because iA Writer is too quick to commit the filename and write it to my network storage. Again, this is fine in principle, but the way they've implemented it, it doesn't scale well if you use a keyboard expansion application.
